Root canal treatment (endodontics) is needed when the pulp inside the tooth becomes inflamed or infected because of deep decay or trauma. If left untreated it can cause pain and lead to an abscess.
During the treatment the infected pulp is removed and inside of the tooth is carefully cleaned and disinfected, then filled and sealed with a rubber like material called gutta percha. The tooth is the restored with a crown or filling. This treatment can take 2 or 3 visits.
