If you have braces, then there are a few extra things you need to do to keep your teeth clean and healthy. For example, you’ll need to brush your teeth more thoroughly to make sure you dislodge any food that gets stuck in your braces.

In this blog post, we’ll give you six tips on how to keep your teeth and braces in good condition.

Tip 1: Clean your braces thoroughly

It’s very easy for food to get trapped in braces. The most common areas where food get trapped are around the brackets and behind the wires. If food is left there, it can lead to plaque and tooth decay. That’s why it’s important to clean your braces thoroughly to make sure that all the bits of food are gone.

Tip 2: Brush gently

Be gentle when brushing your braces because it’s possible to break them if you brush too roughly. The best way to brush your teeth, whether you have braces or not, is to use a gentle circular motion instead of a rough scrubbing motion.

Tip 3: Watch what you eat

When you have braces, it’s important to be careful what you eat. This is for two reasons.

The first reason is that certain foods can damage your braces or get stuck in them. It’s best to avoid these kinds of foods until your braces are taken off. This means avoiding hard, chewy, and sticky foods like peanut butter, caramel, nuts and dried fruit.

The second reason is that sugary foods, like sweets, cake, and biscuits, can easily get trapped in your braces. There, they will feed bacteria and potentially cause plaque. Therefore, you should limit your intake of sugary foods when you have braces.

Tip 4: Drink plenty of water

It’s great to drink plenty of water when you have braces. This is because water helps to wash away any food particles that are caught in your braces.

You can also try swilling your mouth with water after eating and then spitting it out. This is another good way to remove all those small bits of food that get caught in your wires and brackets.

Tip 5: Don’t chew your fingernails

If you chews your fingernails, then it’s best to stop if you’re wearing braces. This is because you could damage your braces by chewing on your fingernails. The brackets on your braces could break, potentially requiring an emergency trip to the orthodontist. Furthermore, the same goes for chewing on other objects, like pens and pencils.

Tip 6: See your orthodontist if you have any doubts

If you having any issues or problems with your braces, then the best thing to do is to talk to your orthodontist. They may be able to adjust your braces or give you tips about how to solve the problem.
